From providing a luxurious feeling underfoot and enhancing the aesthetic of your room to optimising comfort and warmth, there are many ways you can benefit from fitting a carpet in your home.

To keep your carpet looking and performing its best though, you need to ensure you’re caring for it properly so that you can not only enjoy its beauty for decades, but to make the most of your investment.

Because let’s face it – new, good quality carpets don’t come cheap these days.

In this post, our experts share their top tips on caring for your new carpet, to help you get as much life out of it as possible.

1.   Vacuum regularly

Running the hoover over your new carpet is an essential part of its maintenance.

Ideally, you should vacuum high-traffic areas of the home every other day, and all over areas once or twice a week.

Keeping on top of regular vacuuming will help keep build-ups of dust, dirt and other debris at bay, removing them from the carpet fibres and protecting them from discolouration and premature wear.

New carpets also tend to shed, and although this is completely normal, frequent hoovering will help reduce any shedding.

2.   Rotate your furniture periodically

Once your new carpet has been fitted and you’ve moved all your furniture back in, you should make sure to rotate everything regularly.

Moving your furniture by a couple of inches, at least every six months,  will help the carpet fibres retain their fluffy, springy appearance and prevent unsightly permanent dents from forming.

3.   Invest in a carpet protector

To further protect your carpet, be it from furniture indentations or heavy footfall, it’s a good idea to invest in a carpet protector to keep it in tip-top shape.

There are plenty of solutions available that can be used to keep your new carpet looking and feeling luxurious, including welcome mats, area rugs, and even felt protectors beneath furniture legs.

4.   Spot clean spills immediately

If you’ve got small children or pets running around, you’ll know all too well how often spillages happen.

It’s just one of those things, but as soon as you notice any spills, you should clean them up immediately to avoid any permanent staining.

To do this, use a clean cloth to blot up as much liquid as possible, making sure not to rub or scrub the area as this can spread the spill and damage the carpet fibres.

Then, use a clean cloth that’s been dampened with warm soapy water, and blot the rest of the liquid away, leaving your carpet to dry.

For particularly stubborn stains, you can add a touch of bicarbonate of soda or a mild detergent to watch it lift right out.

5.   Deep clean annually

Last, but certainly not least, you should have your carpet deep cleaned by a professional every 12-18 months – even if it doesn’t look visibly dirty.

Not only will this help remove any visible stains that you’re unable to remove, but it will also eliminate particles hidden deep in the carpet fibres that you can’t see, make your carpet look and feel much fresher, remove odours and boost its lifespan!
